Location
Infantry Road Traffic Management
Location: The area of study extends from Ali-Asker road (the left from Sankey tank at Raj Bhavan) to Parsi temple junction with the Coffee Board Junction in-between.
Existing conditions on the stretch:
1. Road width – 10.3m
2. Number of lanes – 3
3. Condition of carriage way – good.
4. Footpath surface – good in most parts.
Issues:
1. Traffic volume twice the road capacity.
2. Three signals within 300m between commissioner’s office and Parsi junction, causing long delays.
3. Large vehicle volume from Sankey road converges onto the narrower Infantry road stretch, hence creating long vehicle pile ups.
4. Average time duration to cross the section between Ali Asker road to Parsi temple junction 10 minutes.
5. Pedestrians have to wait long for crossing the stretch opposite Commissioner’s office.
6. Vehicles parked on footpaths, inconveniencing the pedestrians.

Upcoming projects in and around Infantry road:
1. Potential widening of Infantry road by BBMP
2. Metro work at Minsk Square - This may alter the traffic patterns on Infantry road.
BCCF Recommendations:
1. Construction of grade separators at Coffee Board and Parsi Temple Junction:
The traffic at coffee board junction is 11935 PCUs per hour where as at Parsi temple junction it is 15994 PCUs per hour.
- As per IRC 92 – 1985 : “An interchange may be justified as an at grade inter-section fails to handle the volume of traffic resulting in serious congestion and frequent choking of the inter-section. This situation may arise when the total traffic of all the arms of the intersection exceeds 10,000 PCUs per hour”.
Hence a grade separator is required at both the junctions:

2. Reorganiztion of bus bays at the Indian Express junction:
The present junction at Indian express caters to a huge number of buses that pile up haphazdly. Creating bays to streamline the flow would convenience both the traffic and the commuters.
